‘Hi Phil,
I've been to many workshops and this is one of the best because the
two Phils are founts of industry wisdom and experience and extremely
generous in sharing what they know. Even better, they are adept at
designing and delivering a really well-organised learning experience
that leaves you not only informed but feeling inspired and on the
right track as a screenwriter. It's easy to see why both experienced
and fledgling writers flock to this workshop. In my opinion this is a
'must-do' workshop for screenwriters looking to 'up their game'.
Thank YOU to both you and Phil for an excellent workshop. It was fun,
entertaining and a great learning experience.
Quick question - I really like your business card. Can you tell me
where you got it done?
Cheers’

‘Dear Phil and Phil
Thank you so much for a really informative and enjoyable weekend.
It’s going to take months to absorb fully - but straightaway I feel clearer about many of the core principles of screenwriting and provoked to think in new ways about all my current projects. Particular highlights for me included the spoken pitch and feedback on that; the condensed guide to story structure; the emphasis on building characters with strong contradictions; and the advice on collaboration and personal relationships in the industry. Esther Springer was also a terrific guest speaker, who really opened a window into the world of BBC drama.
Once again, many thanks

‘Hello Phil,
Thank you so much for a fab weekend. Both you and Phil were great, as were my course mates. And a special thanks for hand-holding me through the dreaded pitch experience. I know I just need to keep toughing it out and believing that each time will get easier.
I learned so much and can't wait to try my hand at turning a couple of my story outlines into screenplays - just have the small job of clearing the decks of another two novels before then!
If you're a writer sitting there wondering whether or not it's worth signing up to the Two Phils weekend screenwriting workshop, all I can say is: Do it! Between them, Philip Shelley and Philip Gladwin have years of industry experience, and what's more, they're wonderfully open and generous about sharing their expertise. Over the course of the two days, you'll listen and learn, brainstorm, collaborate and pitch, and will come away with not only your creative well filled with inspiration and motivation, but with a valuable new insight into how to approach the sharp business end of writing for TV or film.’
Kat Black, Novelist
‘Thank you very much for running such a fab bootcamp weekend.
I arrived with low confidence and no expectations. I left with renewed optimism and determination, increased knowledge, more tools in the toolbag, a new project and new professional and social contacts.
The generosity with which both Phils shared their philosophies of working as a professional screenwriter, plus their tried and tested methodologies of getting the actual job done and out there into the world. Personally I constantly fight feeling the work is not good enough and I put it into a drawer where it stays, so as I think I said in he room, I feel after the course that some of the mist on the window has been wiped away and maybe I can get to go to the party. Also you made me think seriously about how many people I do know after 40 years in the business, albeit not as a writer but some writing, and to not be afraid to approach people.
This kind of bootcamp is excellent as a Fillip (see what I did there?) to any kind of block/slowing down, so I would do something like this again in the future. Oh and a Greek writing retreat, that'd be nice. Once a month.
Esther was lovely, and it was interesting to get her take on it all.’
Clare Clifford
‘Dear Phil x 2,
Thank you both so much for such a fantastic course over the weekend - I am still fired up and full of plans for the future. You really helped de-mystify the industry for me and I can't wait to get cracking on some scripts. I just have (2) novels to finish...’
Cesca Major
‘I learnt so much on this course - it really helped me understand how I can structure my writing process and taught me so many valuable lessons in how to develop plot, character and good dialogue not to mention practical tips like how to network without feeling awful. Both Phils have such a wealth of experience and are so approachable and supportive they really create an environment where you feel you can discuss and develop your ideas. You leave feeling you have an invaluable support network – essential for any writer.’
Sian Harries
‘ ‘I can't recommend this course enough. Fantastic value for money. Well managed, packed with information, anecdotes and practical advice. Above all, the two Phils share their passion for stories and create a warm and inclusive atmosphere. A mix of new and established writers, a great new network of writers to touch base with. What's not to like?’

‘ ‘What a weekend. Several days later and I'm still catching my breath. The Two Phils screenwriting course is a true gem, and unlike anything else I've seen or experienced out there. It combines honest, frank and generous insight into not just the craft of screenwriting, but also the business. From two great people that are in the business. This is a rare thing, and for any screenwriter, aspiring or otherwise, this course represents an invaluable opportunity that's worth grabbing with both hands.’
Steve Ruttley
‘ ‘I dithered about whether to sign up to this course – partly because of the money – but now I just wish I’d signed up years ago. It’s a brilliant mixture of craft and industry savoir-faire, which makes you realise how much both aspects combined are important to a writer. And it’s money well spent.
One of the best things about the course was the non-competitive, supportive atmosphere the two Phils managed to establish, which allowed us to be much more creative, and to share ideas, pitches, uncertainties and advice quite openly.
The mix of writing/collaborating exercises and guidance on structure was inspiring – I came away bursting with ideas and the desire to start writing, and I know many of us felt the same way. All of it was offered, not imposed, and all of it was greedily lapped up by us all.
The sympathetic manner in which we were encouraged to start getting serious about making contacts and putting ourselves and our work out there was just as galvanizing. It was particularly effective coming from people who understand all the feelings of reticence, discomfort, even terror that the words ‘network’ and ‘sell yourself’ inspire. Again, the positivity was so encouraging – to be reminded that the industry is not a faceless, hostile, closed shop, but instead full of human beings – and nice ones at that – who might one day enjoy reading your script.’
Clare Bayley
‘ ‘Hi Both,
I found the course hugely enjoyable and informative. I met some interesting, highly talented people and heard some interesting stories and pitches. The course left me feeling inspired and bursting with ideas. I've got a lot of work to do, but at least I know what it is I need to do. It was fascinating to listen and learn from people who work in the business and know the process first hand. I can recommend this course to anyone with an interest in writing screenplays.
Kind Regards
Tracey Jones’
‘ ‘A highly energised and motivational weekend. Great insight into all components of the screenwriting, including craft as well as shedding light on the business side too. A great catalyst for my screenwriting career and current projects too.
Thanks for a great weekend, really enjoyed it.
Warm regards

‘ ‘Informative, stimulating and packed with real world examples and exercises, this Two Phil’s course covered a huge amount of ground from character creation through story development to pitching. With guest speaker Julia Tyrrell’s invaluable take on the world of the agent and the Phils’ own tips and insights flavouring every session, the two days were real value for money. Highly recommended!’
Thanks again for a terrific weekend.

‘ ‘Thank you again for such a great weekend. Screenwriting is something which I really enjoy and that I also want to do professionally.I picked this course as I’ve heard Philip Shelley speak a few times and I read his blog every week with interest. I thought that a two day course would allow me to really immerse myself into this world and meet people who are also in the same boat.
I ended up coming away with more than I could imagine and a sense of achievement and belief in my own work and how I will take it forward.
This course is essential for anyone who is interested in pursuing their career in screenwriting. I can honestly say it’s one of the most enjoyable and interesting courses I have ever been on.’
Best wishes

‘ ‘The 2 Phil’s Guide to Screenwriting weekend course was hugely enjoyable and informative. Everything Philip Shelley and Philip Gladwin promised to cover was covered in depth and detail – from how to repeatedly come up with ideas for an industry that demands a constant supply, through to a study of sub-text. It was really interesting to learn Phil Gladwin’s journey as a scriptwriter because it really brought home the importance of connecting with others in the industry, something I think we all took home with us.
Particularly relevant to me was the verbal pitching session we did and the session on how to construct a script. Coming from a background of writing fiction I struggle not to internalize my characters’ emotions, which you just can’t get away with doing in a drama. For me, being reminded to think in images, use as little dialogue as I can get away with and always to make my antagonist the personification of whatever it is my protagonist is fighting against, rather than just an abstract idea, is something I know I will be able to work into my own writing much more easily now until it just becomes instinctive.
There was a great atmosphere in the classroom and that was a lot to do with the two Phils’ relationship – easy and respectful of each other – which rubbed off on the group and set the tone immediately for the way we all related to each other too. The after- course sessions in the pub with the two Phils were a real bonding exercise, I think we’d all agree.
Julia Tyrrell, Literary Agent, gave her time graciously and shared her experience generously. All in all a good time was had by all in a very convenient central London venue.’

‘ ‘The weekend was very fast paced and energetic - it was great to be in a room with so many creative people and to bounce ideas off each other. The two Phils were always available with insights and advice - both during class time and it the pub afterwards! I certainly learned a lot about the craft and business of screenwriting and found the course to be jam-packed and excellent value for money.’
Jonathan Last
‘ ‘The course was excellent value for money, probably the best of all the screenwriting courses I've been to. There was a constant flow of immediately-useful insights into both the craft and business of screenwriting, with lots of up-to-date practical examples and advice you won't find elsewhere. The two Phils very quickly created a real sense of community within the group, as a result of which we were buzzing all weekend from sharing experiences, encouraging each other, and working together to develop ideas. I left the course massively energised about writing and much more knowledgeable and confident about taking the next steps in developing as a screenwriter.’
Angelina Karpovich
‘ ‘I would thoroughly recommend this course for people who want to get into film and – especially -TV writing in the UK. It is run by two people who have been deeply involved in the industry for many years. They are not just academic tutors – they are working writers, script editors and developers with loads of impressive credits. As well as receiving lots of invaluable insider info about the industry, you will do several practical exercises and have a go at pitching a project in front of the whole class (with honest, professional feedback from tutors who hear pitches every day.) You will also meet people from all walks of life who are at various points in their careers (from relative newbies like myself to people who have already acquired agents and others who already have or have had scripts in development.) These contacts could prove invaluable, as much of the industry seems to work on people helping each other and then passing on the favours down the chain (as the Phils will tell you themselves on the course.)
The two Phils are also generous with their free time after each day’s learning: Much useful information came directly during evenings in the pub with the tutors and most of the class. And, as they will tell you, this is another good introduction into how the industry ticks: You need to socialize, meet people, make contacts. Just sitting at home at your computer and writing brilliant scripts won’t swing it. This was a big wow moment for me - as I hadn’t realized quite how important this factor was. I now intend to change my behaviour a bit.
On Sunday you go home more than satisfied and carrying a thick booklet full of handouts on every aspect of the industry. This is given to you right at the start so you don’t have to make copious notes and can concentrate on listening. All in all, it’s great value to money, there are a limited amount of spaces, and it only runs a few times a year (I believe) so stop thinking about it and sign up.’

‘Having made the decision to do the screenwriting weekend, I was not disappointed. Right from the off, there was a sense that the weekend would deliver as much as it promised. Very quickly it became apparent our instructors not only knew screenwriting inside out, they were also aware of how they should nurture and instruct writers to become better practitioners in their craft.
A good example of this occurred early on the first day when the group – which comprised complete novice to the more experienced – were asked to share a screenplay idea inspired by a news item they had read just recently. As we each took turns reading out our ideas to the group, nothing could have prepared us for what came next as our instructors encouraged us to rethink our ideas using a simple strategy in which elements were changed within it. Three minutes later – as the group fed back these new ideas – there was not one storyline that had not been radically improved as a result of going through this process. The best thing is that the strategy may be used time and again to take average ideas and make them great.
Aside from the fact that a great idea for my next screenplay came out of this session, the afternoon activity of developing complex characters (through observation) also proved priceless. My chosen subject – a man I observed downstairs – seemed less than inspiring. However, when paired with a character (observed by another writer) the two of us soon had the beginnings of a remarkable screenplay idea. As we were encouraged to develop the character’s encounter further (and we fedback to the others) we soon realised that the idea not only excited us but the group as well. Again, another screenplay with a unique storyline which hopefully I will collaboratively develop with her in the near future.
There are so many other things that could be said here about the weekend. Everything from the practical ‘hands-on’ of how to develop a writing career, to the one minute pitching activity, to the way to network, to the unique insights into the industry given by the guest screenwriter who came to talk to us – what a treat! In closing, if you’re serious about developing as a screenwriter and you only have money for one course this year, this is the one to be on. I’ve been on a few and there are those who know their craft and those who have a grasp. The two Phils fall into the former. Well worth the money!’ Robert Eckhard, UK, Sep 2013
‘As the only American at the 2 Phils Screenwriter’s Course I got so many initial “Really? Why are you here?” responses that I started to ask that myself. But after two days of excellent brainstorming exercises, detailed seminars on writing mechanics, insightful discussions concerning the business, and an interesting guest speaker, I realized why I was there: because it was a damn good seminar that helped me on all fronts of my career.
The Phils were not only well-versed in both writing and pitching, but had valuable real world experience. I was also amazed at the level of talent in the room illustrated by the course participants. I made some friendships that weekend that I expect to last for some time.
The course was punctuated by a fascinating talk by Chris Chibnall, fresh off his success of the first season of Broadchurch. With the limited number of participants, Chibnall’s discussion was more conversation than lecture, and his enthusiasm about writing rubbed off on all of us.
I highly recommend the 2 Phils Screenwriting Course and despite the distance, hope to attend another in the future.’ Dave Young, Phoenix, Arizona, USA
‘This was a really energising, inspiring weekend. I learned a terrific amount about the culture and business of screenwriting, and left full of ideas and determination. A week later, things from the course are still bouncing round my head. It was exactly what I needed…’
‘The Two Phils workshop taught me fresh approaches to creating characters and ideas, showing me techniques that I had never considered before. It included proactive workshops that gave you the chance to test your own imagination and even give your own pitch! The workshop gave an insider’s view of what the industry is really like and the best way to develop your career as a writer. What I most loved about the workshop was the other budding writers I met and the enjoyable weekend we spent together. Thank you for a great workshop.’ Sinead Kersse, UK, Sep 2013
‘The Two Phils weekend workshop is full of creative story techniques and practical career advice for writers of all levels. From developing characters and creating story ideas to perfecting dialogue – the Two Phils offered a number of valuable hints and tips. We had a challenging session developing verbal pitching skills and the sessions dealing with the business of screenwriting were an excellent guide to what it takes to break in. The charismatic and entertaining guest speaker Chris Chibnall was open and honest about his career and experiences. The course has reinvigorated me and I have big plans for my current slate of projects! Big thanks to my fellow writers who contributed to my enjoyment of the weekend.’ Frank Saunders, London, UK, Sep 2013
“The Two Phils weekend screenwriting course is a great practical introduction to the art (and business!) of writing for TV. A friendly, open and supportive environment, this is invaluable for anyone wanting to start or boost a screenwriting career.” Naomi Westerman, London, UK, Sep 2013
‘The Two Phils – Telling it like it is.
The two day course on writing and selling screenplays was an intense mix of creative sparks and solid insider knowledge. Phil Shelley sagely guided the group through techniques to create story and character ideas from the world around them. Then Phil Gladwin authoritatively laid down a focussed writing process to turn them into robust pieces of saleable work.
That was just the Setup. Crisis and Resolution followed with the nerve wracking One Minute Pitch session before the final act revealed the promised land of success. In this case it was in the form of guest speaker Chris Chibnal – unassuming, approachable and a thoroughly nice guy. After he had gone it was almost a shock to be reminded of his likely financial worth…
This was no self help, feel good creative writing course, this was honest, testing and yet gently encouraging. There was no ‘nice little short story to take home’ created here but a proper sense of just how to produce something good and the hard work it would take to convince others it was worthwhile. Then there was the group itself, a diverse bunch who quickly gelled into supportive buddies and finally gave me a proper reason for joining Facebook.
As a writer struggling to reconnect with the professional writing world, the course did for me just what I had hoped. It re booted my motivation and re sowed the seeds of networking. Thoroughly recommended.’ Ian Davies, UK, Sep 2013
‘Want to know a great trick for developing gripping characters without writing pages of biography? Or the formula for taking a good idea and making it a great one? And how about insider tips for networking, which ANYONE can use to make those all-important contacts? Then you want to know when the next Two Phils Screenwriting Course is being held.
In years to come there will be big-name screenwriters and showrunners who, when asked what inspired them and got them started, will point to this course. That could be you.’ Nick Jackson, Leeds, UK, Sep 2013
‘You’re very unlikely to find a more instructive, practical and honest workshop on the craft of screenwriting than that fronted by The Two Phils. They are genuinely interested in putting you on the right path and giving you the requisite skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the business today. Rarely have I spent my money more wisely. Thank you Phils.’ Andy Priestner, UK, Sep 2013
‘One important aspect of screenwriting craft is professional development, refresher courses, and just finding arenas where you can get out of your own head space to connect with other writers in order to get input on your ideas and a bit of perspective on your overall endeavour. This workshop fulfills all of those needs and more. The key point is that it is run by working, experienced writers who clearly know what they are doing and who take the time to engage with each participant, and project idea, in a considered and constructive manner. I’ve participated in Screenwriting workshops and events in New York, Tokyo, Glasgow, Sydney… For professionalism, depth of knowledge, useful but no-nonsense feedback, and value for money, The Two Phils ranks among the best I’ve attended.’ Alec McAulay, Tokyo, Japan, July 2013
‘The Two Phils workshop is cram packed with real insight into how the industry works and solid advice for anyone who wants to make a living from it. It includes sessions on how to generate original ideas and pitch them, how to develop engaging characters, how to structure your writing, how to approach the industry and how to develop your career as a writer.
Both Phils are passionate about good writing – and how to achieve it. It’s worth paying close attention to the fast paced sessions and special guest slots which all contain valuable information and advice, don’t worry if you miss something though – they make sure you take home plenty of useful reference material.
I’d strongly recommend that anyone who wants to improve or try and make a living from writing attend this workshop, not only will you get inspired but you’ll also get to meet like minded people and professionals who want to help.’ Kevin Jordan, UK
‘I felt punch-drunk with excitement by the end of the course and am still buzzing from it. I learnt a huge amount about the creative and business sides of screenwriting, and enjoyed every minute.’ Miranda Duffy, Huddersfield, UK, July 2013
‘There is a passion, honesty and generosity to The 2 Phils’ teaching ethic. They drive home the importance of research and structure before committing to script work, as well as giving examples of the nutty simplicity of networking. I did the course because I knew they and their guests would not shy away from the uncertain realities of a screenwriting career.’ Alex Orchard-Lisle, UK, July 2013
‘The Two Phils provide clear, concise and extremely useful information covering everything from structure to selling. The course was packed with techniques and practical advice to improve your script, and tips on how to get that finished piece out there. It was a refreshing weekend, and gave me new vigour and drive to rewrite my current projects and pursue my long term goals. I wanted to get re-inspired, I ended up with much more. Definitely something for everyone, whatever stage you feel you’re at in your career.’ Steve Blame, Cologne, Germany, July 2013
‘The Two Phils provide a unique opportunity for aspiring screenwriters to learn invaluable information from experienced and expert professionals. The weekend is crammed with practical advice, stimulating writing and pitching exercises, thought provoking analysis and fascinating behind the scenes knowledge. And the printed material has a wealth of useful information to take away.
The Phils are honest about the realities of the business but their positivity and obvious love for the craft of storytelling is infectious and inspirational. Both are friendly, down to earth and approachable. The guest speaker, Esther, was a perfect choice; funny, passionate and knowledgeable. She gave us a fascinating insight into the world of script editing and development. You also get the chance to meet other writers and chat with them down the pub. The overall verdict? Give these guys a second series!’ Robin Lindsey, London, May 2013
‘The Two Phils screenwriting courses are a really excellent jump start and health boost for new writers. Split fifty-fifty between the craft of writing and the business of making a professional living, it delivers a proven development method to help you realise the full potential of your script, coupled with crucial sessions on how best to meet and keep colleagues who will enable your career to progress.
As value for money it can’t be beat. Full of practical insights from two engaging, friendly and highly experienced UK professionals, concentrated teaching, ingenious exercises, great course materials in the good company of talented fellow writers. I found this screenwriting course inspiring, thought-provoking, and immensely enjoyable, a complete immersion in the profession of screenwriting. I wasn’t the only attendee who didn’t want it to end. Massive thanks to both Phils and all my fellow writers on the course.’ Steve Graham, Bristol, May 2013
‘Pitch for The Two Phils Weekend Course:
“Factual story about two guys who impart knowledge and wisdom regarding the screenwriting business. They guide their disciples through the real world approach to the craft they love. Don’t be fooled, a Rom-Com this ain’t. It’s gritty, witty and inspiring as they strip back layers of myth and mystery to encourage creativity and set out a clear and concise way ahead. As for happy endings? Well, that’s your bit…”‘ Jeff Beamer “The Bitch to the Pitch”, Preston, May 2013
‘As the only foreigner on the course I had concerns regarding my language knowledge. Will it be good enough to absorb all the valuable information? My doubts were instantly blown away at the introduction as all participants were speaking the international language of pictures, sounds and emotions: the passion for scriptwriting. On this two days there was a healthy balance of theory and practice to experience the essence of being a scriptwriter. After I got some insight of the UK television industry I gained a clearer picture of my strengths and all the fields that need more attention for my personal development. The commitment, honesty and openness of both of you are key to the success of understanding the rules and unspoken laws of this world. I can highly recommend these screenwriting courses for everyone outside UK who may feel some fear to travel to London and spend money for this course: you’ll get more than you expect!’ Emese Nagy, Budapest, Hungary, May 2013
Hi Phil
Just to say how much I enjoyed the weekend course. The exercises were great fun, and really opened my eyes to how creativity can blossom when writers work together. It was great to get the chance to pitch my idea on Day 2, and to gain feedback. The session on networking presented it as a genuine and social activity, rather than the cynical pretence it is often assumed to be.
Thanks for all your help.’ Diane Gowing, Northern Ireland, March 2013
Many thanks for your generosity in giving advice so freely during the course and afterwards in the pub. I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of it and take a huge amount of understanding away from it, I am thrilled to have validated a lot of my 'self-teaching' from books and the www but they cannot ever substitute for practical application and face to face feedback. You learn so much from interaction with other writers and it re-invigorates you and inspires you to battle on with your self-development. Dee Chilton, March 2013
The two Phils are ace. They've designed a really clever course. Day one is the nuts and bolts of how to write a script that people will actually feel compelled to keep reading. Day two is how to open doors into the business and get hired. On both days there's a clear focus on what you need to do and how to do it. The balance of doing, sharing, listening and watching is spot on. Having industry people in on day two works really well. I've got more insight into the business, how it works, what to do to get hired, and what happens once you are hired. Both Phils have a way of getting across their message with a simplicity that's actually incredibly clever - things have landed with me that really haven't before. Memorable. Doable. I felt equipped to go away and put everything in action. And I did. And it all works! A great two days. Jane Eden, March 2013
I would be delighted to recommend this course to anyone who is passionate about screenwriting, and in particular wants to write for TV. The two Phils work brilliantly together as a scriptwriting information duo. Philip Gladwin's writing toolkit is useful for writers at all stages of their career, and the business advice given by script guru Philip Shelley helps you make sense of the seemingly impenetrable world of TV. Add to that their open, honest encouragement and that first commission seems all that more realistic. Gwyn Garfield-Bennett, Jersey, Jan 2013
Instructive, challenging and honest. Worth the time and the money.’ Jo Johnson, March 2013
The weekend course is a fascinating balance of both the craft and the business of scriptwriting. The first day left me inspired to write, with new strategies for both generating original ideas and also structuring my scripts more effectively buzzing around my mind and I've not stopped writing since. It is a testament to both the experience of the two Phil's and their teaching style, informal yet informative, that it captured my attention from the start. The second day gave me a much deeper insight into the industry than I've ever had, far superior to any other course I've been on before. I've now got a realistic strategy in mind for how best to progress my writing career and ensure I make the most of both my own life experiences and the contacts I've made, which I am looking forward to pursuing in the coming months. Thank you so much, a brilliant weekend with a group of lovely people and two wonderful tutors.’ Nicola Walters, March 2013
Lucid, inspirational, and above all practical, the two Phils reveal the mysteries of scriptwriting and the industry in Penn and Teller style. One Phil is certainly tall enough, the other has so much of value to share it wouldn't be fair for him to remain silent.’ Adrian Reynolds, Jan 2013
This course was run by two knowledgable professionals still closely connected with the film/TV industry. The course was presented in a practical and enjoyable way taking us from idea generation to marketing. I went especially for the marketing aspect of the course and found this very insightful.’ Rubina Din, Jan 2013
The weekend course was a brilliant refresher for me. To be able to immerse yourself in screen-writing for 2 days with no outside distractions was wonderful. The tutors are knowledgeable and generous in sharing their insights into the business. I feel better able to focus on what I need to do next. Although I went into the course thinking I had a feature, I realised, thanks to the 2 Phil's clarity of vision, that what I actually have is a TV series. Thoroughly recommend it for all no matter what stage your writing is at, you'll get a lot out of it, and meet some nice people too.’ Sue Du Feu, Jersey, Jan 2013
Dear Phil,
Thanks for putting on a great course, it completely changed the way I think about constructing intriguing characters and the fact that if the characters are interesting enough the plot will write itself.
Funnily enough I took one of the ideas from the Saturday morning brainstorming session and turned it into a beat sheet and then a two page treatment in just one evening!’ Kenneth McLean-Ferris, Jan 2013
As a young writer who feels I am getting closer to making some kind of breakthrough into the industry, I found the course to be extremely interesting, informative and most importantly - motivational. It is a step up from a beginners class, giving an insight into structure and developing engaging characters, so certainly worth attending even if you have already completed several scripts. The second day that deals more with marketing yourself and your work goes into the details that are often -disappointingly - absent from other courses.
After completing the course I found myself energised to improve what I had already written and get working on some new ideas.’ Jordan Thomas, Jan 2013
A very enjoyable weekend, Really nice people, lots of interaction and wonderful insights into the industry and how to avoid despair and desperation. Especially enjoyed the group exercises to stimulate ideas and the sympathetic approach to our attempts to pitch to yourselves and the rest of the class. The key lesson to be learnt is that it is not enough just to be a good screenwriter but that you have to learn to market and sell yourself. Now full of ideas and raring to go. Thank you so much to both of you. With very best wishes’ Graham Walker, Jan 2013
Sitting in a room with the Two Phils and 20 people who are as interested in screenwriting as you are is like having a shot of adrenalin (and I have actually had one, in a hospital in Istanbul, after an allergic reaction to a glass of cheap white wine. It makes your heart nearly pump out of your chest). I digress.
Many screenwriting courses focus purely on the “writing stuff” side of things, and the Two Phils definitely do this - and very well. But they also dedicate a day to telling you exactly what to do if you’ve written a script you want to get made. They don’t promise the process will be easy, but are honest and straightforward about life as a professional creative writer - and aren’t dispirited, either. Which is nice.
All in all a fun, fascinating, inspirational couple of days that will have you staggering home filled with gin from the nearby pub, and lots of lovely new ideas.’ Jemma Walton, Jan 2013
An incredibly fun, informative and essential weekend for aspiring screenwriters. Phil & Phil share their combined industry experience with warmth and generosity in a supportive and lively environment. After 2 days I could pitch a 60 min TV drama in 1 minute ('the elevator pitch') and nail character, story and tone. Unbelievable! Russell Miller, Jan 2013
This is a terrific course to any aspiring writer and professional on their way. Phil and Phil teach clear disciplines which can be systematically applied to existing scripts and guarantee improvement. The exercises are such fun I would actually recommend the course to anyone, irrespective of writing ambitions, who wants an interesting creative weekend. Emma Oxley, London, Jan 2013
Really excellent two days one of my best Christmas presents ever; it's up there with the Chopper I got on my 10th birthday. I highly recommend the weekend course. Phil and Phil give an honest view on what you need to do to break into the world of screenwriting or progress if you're already in it. They have clearly put a lot of thought into what the course should contain and, like a good script, they both have clear and distinct voices. The course has a real authentic and relevant feel, and this, added to the guest speaker's views, gives you a window into the whole development process. Just do it, you won't regret it.' Andrew Crook, UK, Jan 2013
This course is a MUST for all aspiring screenwriters. Incredibly good value for such access to the knowledge and advice of four top industry experts. 'Phil and Phil delivered the course in a friendly, accessible and inspiring way which was easy to follow and never over complicated. There were also plenty of opportunities for all delegates to ask questions and to participate in group discussion. The exercises we were asked to perform were amazing and really opened my eyes to the high quality stories and ideas that can be generated in a relatively short space of time if you just know where to look! It was great to meet and make contacts with so many talented screenwriters and industry professionals. To share ideas with them and to have immediate feedback really was invaluable. This course is inspirational. If you have the opportunity please go, I guarantee you will not regret it.' Dan Craddock, UK, Feb 2012
'I feel that others should attend this course if they want honest and professional advice on screen writing. I think that because you are coming in from different angles in the industry - and don't always agree on everything too - a good balance is achieved. The two days are packed with really useful tips and information which are well supported by the excellent hand outs. The group exercises further stimulated and informed us all and you were both approachable and listened to what everyone had to stay. I have come away from the weekend feeling far better prepared for the hurdles ahead and with a clearer idea of where I want to go with my ideas and my style.''Louis Levin, UK, Feb 2012
'I've done a number of creative writing courses, but this was my first foray into screenwriting and it didn't disappoint. I've come away with renewed enthusiasm and excitement about writing as well as a comprehensive understanding of how screenwriting works - both from a creative and business perspective. This course offers you the tricks of the trade as well as a real understanding of the industry. Philip Gladwin and Philip Shelley work very well together and have different approaches that really compliment each other - both are very encouraging and supportive. The course comes highly recommended.' Clare O'Callaghan, UK, Feb 2012
'The Phils' course on screenwriting should be marketed to the educational system English and Drama departments. It boils down the rules for writing and pitching a script to the relevant, pertinent, essentials that one can follow in a very practical and practicable manner. It just makes sense from the first exercise to the last. Take this course the very next time it is offered. I've found nothing out there in the world of screenwriting - or on any writing instruction - that compare to the lessons I've just learned this weekend.' Brenda Howard Harmon, Indiana, USA, Feb 2012
'Phil and Phil are the friendliest, most approachable industry chaps you could ever hope to meet. Any screenwriter, budding or experienced, would be foolish to miss such a cracking opportunity to learn about screenwriting from the inside out. Everything I thought I needed to know plus a whole lot more is covered in two extremely well focused days in an intimate and informal group atmosphere. Jolly well get yourself to one of these weekends darn it, they're quite frankly brilliant.' Louise Beere, UK, Feb 2012
'If you're planning on a screenwriting career this course should be number one on your list. The course is run by two people who have been and done it and have a wonderful insight into the business. I got so much out of this course and thoroughly recommend it. Don't delay, enroll today!' Deborah Lewis, UK, Feb 2012
'I found the weekend to be a great help in identifying quick, efficient tools for producing story. It was also an excellent forum for learning how to pitch and a useful space in which to practise what we had learned. I made good contacts, received helpful feedback and left feeling energised and excited about my script work.' Alan McDonald, Scotland, Nov 2011
'The screenwriting business is incredibly competitive. It's rare to meet anyone who is willing to say, with complete candour, 'This works for me, why don't YOU try it?' This course offers not just one, but TWO highly respected industry professionals who are prepared to do this. Believe me, if you're at all serious about getting on in the business, it's an offer you shouldn't refuse!' Jan Smith, Scotland, Nov 2011
'The combination of the Phils’ extensive knowledge and experience of the industry made for a refreshingly unpretentious and enormously helpful course. Two days of interesting sessions, focused firmly on practical, real techniques and strategies to improve script-writing skills and to develop and make the most of contacts to get the work out there. An ideas-packed weekend that gave me just the revitalising kick I needed. And Phil’s advice on how to follow-up contacts has already started to bear fruit!' Linda Duncan McLaughlin, Glasgow, Nov 2011
'It was a great event that offered up reams of ideas about how to turn the dreaded blank page into scores of ideas for scripts. It was wonderful to be able to pitch our significant ideas to a room full of talented writers and the two Phils, and the Q&A session with ex head of TVS Eric Coulter, and Kate Croft from Shed TV was worth the train fare and hotel costs alone. It was fabulous to touch base with other writers and start up new networks, and the Facebook group has already shown huge generosity in sharing opportunities.' Sarah Wishart, England, Nov 2011
'I have cerebral indigestion from the sheer amount of screen-writing information thrown at me over a packed two days. I left the course armed with some great new practical writing tools and renewed focus.Icing on the cake were the other course attendees who all really showed off the wealth and quality of “unknown” talent out there; and the two Phils who were thoroughly approachable and hugely knowledgeable. Highly recommended!' Frank Arnot, Scotland, Nov 2011
'It’s been a couple of weeks since I attended the two day course, and I’m still buzzing. An intense, but very friendly and open, two day workshop which covered subjects such as story structure, generating ideas and a very novel exercise in character creation, through to marketing yourself and your work. It was full of interactive tasks which were both interesting and thought provoking. As well as this, the course covered so much practical information that you’ll never find in the ‘how-to’ books, but which can only come from years of experience working within the business. Another advantage of the course being over two days, is that there is more time to get to know everyone, and what course wouldn't be complete without a good chinwag in the bar afterward, where even more valuable tips and advice was traded over drinks? Highly recommended, so if you get the chance to attend one, grab it!' Magz Wiseman, Scotland, Nov 2011
'Just a note to say thank you for a brilliant weekend full of insight, revelations and things that I half knew, but wasn't thinking deeply enough about. It's the best kick-start scriptwriting workshop I've been to, full of eye-opening techniques that fired me up and got me writing furiously again. When writing, it's easy to start in the wrong place both mentally and physically. The weekend was full of practical exercises that really have given me a fantastic starting point, the next time I sit down to write. Your session on making contacts was enlightening – I'm bad at small talk and not good at pushing myself forward but you made networking human and something to look forward too (if that doesn't make me sound like some sort of robotic drone!) Everything you told us should be obvious, but it wasn't until you said it! You've given me a new lease of life and I'll definitely keep in touch. When I've written a treatment for The World's Smallest Bank Robbery I'll be asking for your services.' Rebecca McFarland, Scotland, Nov 2011
'The course provided a much-need insight into how the world of screen-writing works and of the level of structure you need in order to stand a chance of having your material produced... I enjoyed the sessions where we collaborated in groups and was amazed at the creativity of three or four people working together to a tight deadline. It was inspiring to hear what originality, humour, and sheer cleverness emerged from the whole group through this way of working... The two guest speakers oozed professionalism and were very engaging and clear in their delivery... I felt the course was value for money. It was a rare opportunity to meet two people like you who have been steeped in their craft and enjoyed a great deal of success, in other words, who know the score! You are also very personable and helped people relax which is hugely important.' Hilde de Felice, Scotland, Nov 2011
‘I attended the workshop as a novelist increasingly interested in writing for screen and was unsure what to expect. What I got exceeded any expectations I might have had -- two perfectly paced days of business and craft, information and insight, advice and inspiration, carefully planned and compellingly presented by a writer, an editor and an agent who have all walked the walk and know how to talk the talk. I left knowing an awful lot more than I knew 48 hours before and with a clear pathway to progress. I couldn't have asked for more.’ Orna Ross, UK, Sept 2011
'Having attended the Workshop in October I strongly urge anyone who hasn't already to book a place immediately, you will not regret it. Phil and Phil are fantastic teachers and I found myself totally engrossed in the whole process, I really appreciate the time and effort they put into making the weekend so jam packed with useful information and fun tasks to participate in. I felt a lot more connected to screenwriting concepts that I had read time and time again in books but nothing compares with hands on experience. The topics I found most useful were pitching and networking, I feel much more at ease with both since the workshop. I came out buzzing with ideas not only on how to improve current projects I am working on, but also brand spanking new ones! Also I met some other great aspiring screenwriters and have stayed in touch with them too. I am so glad I bit the bullet and went on this course.' Katerina Pritzakis, UK, Sept 2011
'I left the two day course brimming with lots of great ideas, and a knowledge of how to push my stories forward. I feel the weekend was suited to the experience and the beginner alike. It is a great opportunity to discuss ideas with industry professionals and hone your pitching skills.' Caron Stace, UK, Sept 2011
'Can I just say how enjoyable and engaging I found the two day course. I came away with much more focus and direction in my writing, which i must say, was badly needed. It was honest, practical and friendly. I would recommend it to anyone with a serious interest in scriptwriting. To be be taught by industry professionals with a track record as opposed to theorists is invaluable, and rare.' Steve Rehman, UK, Sept 2011
'I recently attended the Screenwriting Goldmine Seminar in London and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm a journalist who wants to write for tv and film and have previously studied for three years on scriptwriting courses at College and University and the odd screenwriting seminar up and down the country, but the Screenwriting Goldmine really showed the green light on things for me. The two Phils were brilliant in explaining everything like how pitching really works and how to bring to life characters that leap out at you off the page. It was thoroughly rewarding. The session with Julia Tyrrell Literary agent was also very illuminating. For anyone contemplating on going to the seminar or not, I'd say don't contemplate, just go. It is more than worth it and you'll learn so very, very much.' Brenda Young. UK, Sept 2011
‘Any book can teach you the basic concept of 'The Three Acts' and a character’s 'needs and wants', but a book only has so many pages. Most of the guides I’ve read or lessons I’ve had teach the craft of screenwriting but have very little on the business side. The two Phil’s bring something to this course that is much more valuable than writing on a page - they interact with you and share their deep pool of wealth and knowledge. They cover all areas of the trade and in great depth, whether it is characterisation, structure, agents, networking, pitching or any little question you need answered. They don’t look down on you or treat you like you’re a student; instead they sit down with you and chat you through everything. You don’t feel pressured or like you’re in a regimental screenwriting camp where you’re just another face. They show you new ways to think that might not have occurred to you before. In the first two hours there were already so many ideas for scripts rolling around the room that you could fuel an entire day’s worth of programs on one channel. The life of a writer doesn’t mean you have to lock yourself in a room in front of a computer or paper - sometimes getting out there and interacting with like minded people gives you more drive than you can ever imagine. Well worth the money! Plus, any weekend where I get a free book and a pint is certainly a weekend worth doing.' Ryan Cope, UK, Sept 2011
'My writing has improved, my structure has improved, my pitching has improved. Many thanks, Phil & Phil!' Paul Molloy, UK, Sept 2011
‘The atmosphere created by Philip Shelley and Phil Gladwin was so obviously based on their genuine desire to share their knowledge in the most accessible manner. Practical exercises from the moment of first introductions brought the group together and sparked creativity. One of my favourite tasks was the walk-about town to pick up... well I'm not telling. Philip and Phil were generous and relaxed in sharing their experiences, the time spent was full of practical advice, the material available almost bursting out of the seams of time. The absence of posturing, one-up-man-ship and name dropping was refreshing. I look forward to the next workshop and hope to be able to attend.’ Cornelia Bullen-Smith, UK, July 2011
‘I am just over the moon to have been part of this two day seminar. For me it was the first time I encountered such a bunch of warm, open and generous people without any hidden agenda, which is quite a contrast to all the sharks and know- it- all’s I have met before. I have made some contacts that could well turn my life in another direction. To be continued!’ Luk Simoens, Belgium, July 2011
‘Thanks once again for the very helpful advice and wisdom you dispensed to us poor hopefuls last weekend. It really was just what I needed at the moment, not least because in the last few days I've been given a shot at pitching an idea to a production company. I hope to take what I learned and really put it to the best use possible.’ Jill O'Halloran, UK, July 2011
‘Got home yesterday evening, slumped in front of the telly, watched New Tricks, thought "I can do better than that", and started to plan out an episode... Long queue in the bank this morning, passed the time inventing characters for everyone in the queue... So the weekend definitely worked for me - just the kick up the arse I needed. And huge fun! So big thanks to everyone, but especially Phil and Phil.’ Caroline Harrington, UK, July 2011
‘I really got a lot from the course and was so grateful to you both for your inspiration, generosity and encouragement. In the past I've done an MA in Film and Drama at Reading University, studied Script Development at NFTS and attended Writernet courses in Script Editing and Continuing Drama, they were all excellent, but I have to say, I really connected with your philosophy and style and felt that you helped me to understand some things really for the first time.’ Mandy Constance, UK, July 2011
‘Finally landed in California to a good night's sleep since I don't know when. So jazzed by London and you guys, I hadn't realized that I even needed sleep! I now find myself with a renewed sense of purpose and a more positive outlook on life. Your efforts have paid off for me, and I am grateful to you all. This course allowed me to gauge where I fit in among real writers, because real writers with real stories and real talent were there. We encouraged each other, found that other people can be creative in ways other than our own, and discovered that our own perspectives really do benefit other writers. Here await in person, ladies and gentlemen, the insiders willing to actually take us inside, to teach us the standards necessary for our successes. They have foiled the villain and lived to tell us the tale.’ Terry Smith, USA, July 2011
‘The weekend was oddly human, sensitive to the needs of those in the room. It felt as though Phil and Phil were revealing (showing not telling) how the system works in order to make the course feel more like a meeting than a series of rigid lectures. That they are both so active in the industry makes a huge difference. It worked well for me. It was simply a very good course. I recommend it.’ John Storey, UK, July 2011
‘For a new screenwriter such as myself the workshop was very well pitched: informative, encouraging and, at the same time, very helpfully realistic about the problems of successfully launching scripts. I think I especially warmed to the friendly atmosphere the two Phils created that allowed them to engage everyone in discussions and workshop activities that illustrated the points they wanted to make - points that were re-enforced by many useful notes. The talk by an experienced literary agent, Julia Tyrrell, was another helpful addition. I would definitely be interested in attending another Goldmine/Script Consultant Workshop in the future.’ Margaret Folarin, UK, July 2011
