ONE DAY INTRODUCTION TO SCREENWRITING COURSE London Saturday March 22nd
I’m delighted to be running this one day course for the first time for 2 years and I am now taking bookings.
Please see all the information and testimonials on the course page on my website –
One Day Introduction to Screenwriting – Philip Shelley, Script Consultant
While this one day course is an introduction, it is also a celebration of the wonderful art of screenwriting. Within the day, I aim to provide budding writers with all the knowledge – both creative and practical – to begin their screenwriting journey. But it will also be useful for more experienced writers – hopefully acting as an inspiration and creative boost, a reminder of the exciting possibilities of storytelling for the screen (whether for film or TV).
In the morning I will be covering presentation of your script – not just the nuts and bolts of formatting but, more importantly, how to get your vision onto the page, how to communicate your story to your reader (and audience) in the most effective way.
I will then go onto the crux of the course – to discuss the fundamentals of screenwriting – story, structure, character, genre, dialogue, tone…illustrating with clips from film & TV.
The afternoon will be led by two brilliant guest speakers –
JAMIE HEWITT – Jamie is development producer for Tiger Aspect Drama. He worked with me as script editor on the Channel 4 screenwriting course and is now a hugely experienced script editor and development producer with many production credits. Jamie will analyse and discuss WE ARE LADY PARTS episode 1 (written by Nida Manzoor, an alumna of the Channel 4 screenwriting course). This session is an appreciation and analysis of an outstanding piece of screenwriting – and the way in which it translated from script to screen.
This will be followed by a Q&A with screenwriter ANNA SSEMUYABA. Anna is a hugely accomplished screenwriter, another alumna of 4screenwriting. Initially Anna worked in script development and script editing but has gone from strength to strength as a screenwriter, her credits include UPLOAD, SMOTHERED, HIJACK, THE BUCCANEERS. Anna will discuss all aspects of her work – both craft and career – how she started out and got her initial breaks as screenwriter, and discussing the work she has done, managing her career and workload, etc.
In the final session of the day, I will answer all your final questions and make some final points.
I will email all delegates a bumper pack of handouts to look at before the day – and will be selling (and signing if requested!) copies of my book, SCREENWRITING – THE CRAFT AND THE CAREER on the day.
This will be followed by a (voluntary!) NETWORKING SESSION in a nearby pub – a chance for you to meet and talk to the other writers on the course, to ask me questions in a less formal setting. Meeting your writing peers and building up your own network of like-minded people is such an important part of building and sustaining a life in screenwriting.

A testimonial from the January session –
‘Philip’s Script Reading & Development Q&A was packed with insightful advice around starting an editorial career in the industry. I received feedback on my CV and clear, actionable pointers to use when contacting companies for script reading work. Philip’s focus on the ‘how to’ of finding opportunities really sets the session apart – I came away inspired with pages of notes and a mile long to-do list!’
